History -
The idea of Aladdin becoming a Disney musical feature was first proposed by Howard Ashman in 1988 when he and Alan Menken were still working on "The Little Mermaid." Everyone on the Disney team loved the idea of re-creating the story and got right to work. Howard Ashman and Alan Menken worked together to produce six original songs for Aladdin. Unfortunately in 1991, Howard Ashman passed away, leaving the Aladdin project unfinished. Alan Menken couldn't complete the soundtrack alone, so he appointed Tim Rice to help him. Mr. Rice helped write the songs "One Jump Ahead" and "A Whole New World." The art directors and animators that worked on the movie focused on an Arabian aspect when they were creating the scenery and characters. The animator for the Genie, Eric Goldberg, was mainly inspired by artist Al Hirschfeld.
The film was very successful in the theaters, becoming the highest-grossing animated film in that time. It earned over $200 million internationally. Aladdin also won "Best Song" and "Best Original Score" at the Acadamy Awards. The video release of the movie was also record-breaking.
Aladdin was like no other animated feature at that time. It proved the genius of Disney animation once again and introduced new special effects. Aladdin is considered one of the greatest Disney classics today.
