History -
The Little Mermaid paved the road for the comeback of Disney animation, also known as the "Disney Renaissance". This was the first animated feature based on a fairy tale since Sleeping Beauty (1959). Disney had considered the Hans Christian Andersen story in the late 1930's, but the idea didn't make it into production due to complications and gaps in the plot. This consideration did reach the mind of Disney animator Kay Nielsen who started creating concept sketches and characters after hearing Disney was thinking about doing The Little Mermaid. When the story was brought back up in 1987, the new generation of Disney animators looked to Kay Nielsen's work for inspiration and visual development. The film was produced in two years despite the ground-breaking effects Disney used.
