History -
While the production of Snow White was winding down, Walt Disney was looking for the next big idea for a movie. He came across the story of Bambi written by Felix Salten, and pitched it to the rest of the staff. The people at Disney were reluctant to accept it, mainly because Bambi was so different from any Disney film before. It was more serious, and all the characters were animals (which posed a problem for the animators). When the film went into production, animators listened to lectures from animal experts, visited zoos, and studied wildlife films. All these rescources helped give animators the perfect ideas for their characters. The film moved exceedingly slowly through the production process, but Walt was delighted with the results. Bambi was released in the midst of World War II, so initial profits in the box office were low, but today the film is considered one of Disney's most popular classics.
