History -
It took over three years to produce Beauty and the Beast, let alone all the hard work put in by almost 600 animators, artists, and technicians. To make the scenery and lanscaping perfect, animators traveled to France for inspiration and studies the artwork of famous painters Fragonard and Boucher to give their settings a European look. The characters were mostly the idea of lyricist Howard Ashman, who came up with the idea of having the enchanted objects speak and have personalities. The Beast was a true masterpiece created by Glen Keane. Keane combined the mane of a lion, the beard and head of a buffalo, the tusks and nose of a wild boar, the heavily muscled brow of a gorilla, the legs and tail of a wolf, and the big body of a bear to make up the Beast's qualities.
Beauty and the Beast was also one of the first Disney movies to incorporate computer-animated features, notably in the "Be Our Guest" sequence and the ballroom scene. With the combination of landscape, characters, and computer-animated influences, Beauty and the Beast was sure to be a hit. It became the most successful animated feature in motion picture history up to that time, with domestic box office revenues exceeding $140 million.
